A new member of my team recently asked me an interesting question about Yacht Brokerage:

“ How much is luck involved in being a successful yacht broker?”

It’s an interesting question, and in truth many successful people will admit that luck has played some part in achieving their goals. 

In the case of yacht brokerage, the GOOD news is that luck certainly does play a big role. 

The BAD news is that it is mostly BAD luck. 

I made this observation to a group of broker friends and they all laughed about my comment, but at the same time they heartily agreed. Whilst it is true that from time to time a client will walk into an office and immediately order a yacht…these cases are few and far between. It is far more common for a broker to work for months to find a buyer, get a contract signed, receive a 10% deposit for the sale, successfully complete a sea trial…and then the bad luck hits. The surveyor discovers structural damage to the stringers in the hull, an engine breaks down, the buyers’ partner files for divorce, or the value of their business crashes overnight.

I have personally lost two clients to death after they made acceptable offers on yachts. TWO! I was going to rename my company “Grim Reaper Yacht Sales”!

I am not telling you this to discourage you from becoming a yacht broker, but rather because I want all students of the Yacht Broker Master Class to go into it with their eyes open. The potential for earning significant amounts of money is great, but it takes resilience and persistence to get there.
